Chapter Twelve
âBut Jane, the blue silk is perfectly fine,â Elizabeth insisted, her hands on her hips as she considered the gowns displayed on the bed.
âIt is three years old!â Jane reminded her.
âTrue, but in those three years it has remained my personal favorite gown. And that is why I choose to be married in it,â Elizabeth declared. She picked the gown up and pressed it against her and looked in the mirror, imagining herself standing next to Fitzwilliam in the chapel at Rosings.
âBesides, there is no time now to get something new made. I am perfectly satisfied,â Elizabeth said, placing the gown on top of her trunk.
âWear this one for the ball then,â Jane suggested, pointing to a satin cream gown with a lavender silk ribbon that encircled the waist. âThe fabric is so pretty.â
Elizabeth nodded in agreement.
âThat is a sentimental one; itâs what I was wearing at the assembly the night we first saw Mr. Darcy and he proclaimed me not handsome enough to dance with. I doubt he remembers what I had on, but I want to wear this for myself as a sort of triumph or, at the least, a symbol of the unpredictability of the human heart.â
âIndeed!â Jane concurred.
âFurthermore, I am confident that Lady Catherine will look down her nose at whatever I wear. But I do not care at all for her approval; it is beyond my control whether she bestows it on me or not.â
âI believe you already have her approval,â Jane said earnestly, placing the cream gown atop the blue silk to be packed.
Elizabeth laughed heartily in response. It was Janeâs natural way to always see the best in any situation, no matter how dire.
âNo, I for one am not convinced. I have looked into her eyes and what I saw there was not pleasant.â
âBut she hosts the wedding party and a ball at a considerable expense. She would not do it if she could not stand the sight of you,â Jane asserted. âWhich shoes?â
âThose two pairs,â Elizabeth pointed. Jane laid them at the foot of the trunk.
âWhat about the stripe? I thought this would be fitting for the day between the ball and the wedding. I suppose we will take a walk or dine together that day, all of us, as per the usual routine at Rosings.â Elizabeth furrowed her brow as she considered her remaining gowns.
Jane nodded. âI think the stripe is perfect for walking. You should take that extra shawl just in case. Is Rosings very grand?â
âAs grand as Mr. Collins insists it is, Iâm afraid. The interior boasts the finest in ornamentation and be sure to notice the glazing on the windows when you approach,â Elizabeth teased. âBut really, I am glad that you and Mr. Bingley have rooms in the house with me. Mamma and Pappa have accommodations at the Crane Inn, and she was quite offended by the snub. But Pappa is happier with the arrangement, so he says, and I believe him.â
âAnd then to Pemberley! Do
